Dreaded but overcome was the Drake Passage. Plenty of ships have not been able to overcome the passage that runs from Cape Horn on the tip of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula. Strapped in for sleep by their bunk seat belts, the women traveled on the Explorer for 48 hours across this passage. For one of the ladies, some bruises were inevitable.

There were millions and millions of penguins. For one lady, the penguins and their nests could be touched. The daily activity of penguins is fussing. There was much bliss in looking at them. Seals were also there. Open mouthed scooting around was their game. These are not as gentle if you get close to them and their babies.

Much beauty can be seen all throughout. The sky is the most gorgeous blue all the time, it’s so clean and the water is so blue. Icebergs measured to about three stories high and were as large as city blocks and these floated along and some even had penguins. It was also part of their journey to see the old whaling stations closed for 20 years. While the trip didn’t include a plane ride to the South Pole, they saw some of the huts left by the early explorers, some still hold canned food stored there years ago.

In this particular journey they went to Punta Arenas on the south end of Chile, the Shetland Islands, Antarctica, the South Orkneys, South Georgia, and finally the Falklands and then back to the starting point.Such a trip was truly extraordinary as both of them agree.
