The sunrise scene over the plains of Antarctica is the one memory this traveler can never ever forget. He recalls it fondly as a religious moment. God could really be felt there, said the fifty year old Texan. Seeing this great mass of ice and volcanic ash is a privilege that he celebrates among a few who did.

Most everybody who comes here whether scientist, pilot or extremely adventurous tourist passes first through McMurdo Station, an unlovely hodgepodge of concrete buildings, oil tanks and huts at the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf. The National Science Foundation finances and manages McMurdo, which is a former US military outpost. Few things can be done there.Physical health and thick polar clothing are requirements for a simple trip outdoors in this extremely cold area.Looking at nature’s beauty was something he did even if he worked difficult shifts. He truly enjoys the sight of the four hour sunsets over the Royal Society Mountains before the Antarctic winter.

The names of the participants who were part of the 1908 Shackleton expedition were also one thing he really liked to see. The characters at McMurdo were, to him, people he would never forget. Each person who was there had an interesting life story, he explained.

He has no fears about the landscape even if it is dangerous. Antarctica was also not intimidating to a 47 year old female British civil employee who, along with her husband, paid $16,000 for a cruise from New Zealand that visited some penguin breeding grounds. Penguins are special animals to her. As a child, I would always look for them at the zoo. They are like small people. I wouldn’t call them cute, but they are attractive and one of a kind. If you need more details on Recommended Antarctica Cruises visit there.

A memory comes to her mind about Antarctica that still remains with her to this day. That scene was the overwhelming presence of thousands of King Penguins. She described it as something truly eye catching. Trips to The Ice aren’t meant only for those with academic grants and pilot’s licenses.

Other things can be considered if you are not the person who wants to join the modern day version of the Foreign Legion. There are ships that sail from New Zealand that can take you to Antarctica for $3,000. Taking a flight to the South Pole would be pricy. It is meant for those who like adventure and who are willing to spend plenty of money.

Not only in books but in movies as well are speculations when it comes to the lost empire of Atlantis. No one knows what it was or where it is. Much clarity can come from this In two essays from the Greek philosopher Plato, in Timaeus and Critias to be exact, Atlantis was mentioned in passing and this spearheaded the ongoing fascination of both professionals and amateurs. In one Internet bookstore are 438 titles that are all about this. Courtesy of Disney was a full length film called Atlantis The Lost Empire.

Plato could not have fabricated the tale of Atlantis, a land not only beholding the sunlight but also bringing forth a wondrous abundance, or so many scholars and believers say. Can another historical figure be responsible for Plato’s Atlantis. Because he died about a dozen years after Atlantis was made known, Plato never got to tell if it was true. If you’re on the hunt for top travel to antarctica information, make sure to visit them.

In existence was Solon, the historian from whom Plato quoted Atlantis. It has been said by skeptics that Solon made everything up and lured Plato to believe. There has been much said about how Plato was incapable when it comes to being as descriptive of a person despite his intellectual nature and so he could not have possibly come up with an image of a series of rings reflecting the empire with the royal palace at the middle and having dug out canals leading into the cities not to mention numerous statues and bath houses.

But it is still a lingering question of how long Atlantis really existed for it was an empire that could easily build nuclear bombs not to mention develop numerous flying machines however being destroyed by 9000 BC from the accounts of Plato. Even the location of Atlantis is left unknown. It was said to have been in Thira, an island destroyed during 1470 BC by a volcano.

For Atlantis’ location, another one would be off of the coast of Spain in the Azores in the Atlantic. Most of the time when underwater ruins are discovered, they are usually attributed to Atlantis. For their world expeditions, explorers from Europe utilized maps that had locations for Atlantis. If you’re looking to learn about antarctica vacation, visit their site for more details.

From the skin of elephants came about impressive flying machines that they used for explorations. Off of the coast of Bimini was where Atlantis was also said to have been located. After the destruction, there were still a number of survivors. For these survivors, Egypt became their new home and they shared what they knew with others. Traces of Atlantis could be found in a secret chamber in the Great Sphinx.

It was only in 4000 BC when Antarctica had ice. Nothing but underground explosions and seismic upheavals were experienced beforehand. Existing civilizations had no chance of survival with some of these. For one author, much research was done before any writing was done on Atlantis and he found out that it indeed existed in the Atlantic Ocean. The reason for its absence is a nuclear explosion in the past. In the past nuclear weapons were also available just like today. Atlantis’ demise was because of their own fault during a civil war as they used nuclear weaponry.

Snow and cold was something appreciated by this gentleman after years at the Atigun Pass, the topmost area of the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Hence, once this retired civil engineering expert heard more about the local university’s alumni association’s plans to travel to the white kingdom, Antarctica, he began to be all excited. Such a plan, for me, is marvelous. Despite the fact that Antarctica is the least hospital and the coldest place on Earth, tourists both armchair and real ones aim to venture to it one day.

Until recently, though, only a small number actually stepped foot each year on the White Continent, in large part because it’s not an easy or cheap place to get to. Getting to the Antarctic Peninsula entails starting at Argentina’s southernmost area, Ushuaia City, for a two day journey through the roughest seas in the world, Drake Passage for about 1,000 kilometers. You’ll get further resources on Russia Cruise by visiting there.

Exhilarating and profound experiences as this one will have lasting effects on you. Since the late 1800s, men traverse this continent after being discovered back in 1820. It is a fact that the commercial voyages only came after the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959, which established the White Continent as a natural reserve, a haven only for science and serenity.

But not until the death of the Iron Curtain in the 1990s, the evolution of the travel industry was not so overwhelming. But as scientific programs found no financial assistance, Russian ice rated expedition ships grew suddenly available while tour operators, speedily renovated them for commercial travel as this was a golden opportunity. Many visitors are seasoned world travelers looking for something out of the ordinary. But there are those yearning for thrill much like what Sir Ernest Shackleton came to be known for, after enduring his 1914 expedition and coming out to tell a great tale about his marvelous survival expedition.

This extraordinarily beautiful realm enables one to cruise among gigantic icebergs and glaciers, fill the landscape, and boasts of attracting so many nature lovers, artists and of course, photographers. Get set to be thrilled once you see penguins, seals and different kinds of whales like minke, killer and humpback. But don’t expect the polar bears for they thrive in the circumpolar area. You may be looking for Kamchatka Peninsula information, in which case you should visit that site.

The nonexistence of ports and docks led to people relying on zodiac boats which are rubberized and inflatable. Now, you are able to hike, kayak amid icebergs and stand with penguins so be sure to take pictures. Your naturalist experts should be able to confidently answers queries about the frozen continent’s wildlife, marine biology, glaciology and history all the time.

He got to learn so much during his trip thanks to local wildlife and landscape lessons both when he was in a 5 star cruise liner for 5 days and in Buenos Aires for 3 days. He also enjoyed naturalist guided excursions to several penguin rookeries an experience he found incredibly thrilling. These short legged and adorable creatures put up a show for him, and it was interesting how they were curious but not fearful at all.

But then not all people look forward to exploring the White Continent as much as the others. The common fear of some environmentalists is the damage to the fragile Antarctic ecosystem caused by the tourists growing in number each year, posing harm to breeding of wildlife thus reducing the population. The global organization of Antarctic tour operators have agreed to strictly abide by the regulations set in order to minimize the ill environmental impacts caused by tourism to this land. We can keep the region pristine with good operational and environmental regulations along with ensuring that companies, people and natural programs adhere to these strictly.

Adding fuel to the fire are the shows on TV which make viewers believe that animals, especially penguins that calls Antarctica its home, are just mere forms of entertainment, he sadly reveals. Animals are not wary if they are used to people surrounding them. But this long term disassociation from the real world has become a huge quandary. Conservationists do not readily agree. However, he argues that by allowing more people to come to this continent, they will develop sensitivity for it on their own.

Raging snow, ice, isolation, high winds and raging seas of Antarctica still lure in more and more travelers especially the hardy types which means that the White Continent will be able to welcome again around 11,200 people come tourists season, where all of them except for only about 130, will be venturing there riding a cruise liner. The disparity of last year’s tourist season to this year, which ran from mid November up to February is only a weak 400 visitors but the truth is that this is actually an impressive 70 percent leap as compared to the season, all 6,585 of them before this one. Antarctica’s many watchers are growing worried towards its environment and warned that Antarctic visitors could grow by the thousands annually.

An Antarctic cruise can easily reach $20,000 just for a single traveler as the average 14-day cruise is a still hefty $6,000 to $7,000, plus the traveler will have to purchase a round trip ticket to where 90 percent of the trips depart, in Ushuaia, Argentina in Tierra del Fuego. Underneath the invincible mask of Antarctica, it is not insulated from the growing number of travelers, despite the cost of going there as well as its merciless climate and geography, so nature experts today maintain that super saturation of tourists leads to formidable threats to their environment. If you need more details on Papua New Guinea Vacation visit there.

The one director behind the Antarctic Project maintains that restrictions on the annual number of visitors along with banning new site explorations should be done even as Antarctica should be set for all the world to behold due to its breathtaking beauty.Spanning 40 different countries and with a membership of 40 countries, this Washington based project is the according secretariat. It’s true that once people visit Antarctica they come back committed to its conservation, but the downside is that there are so many visitors and Antarctica is so fragile, that there’s a danger they’re loving it to death.

This director is largely concerned about the many tourists venturing to the same places on Antarctic Peninsula which is 800 miles long and has the largest concentration of penguins, seals and birds so he is pushing for a 6,000 limit of visitors per year. But on one specific occasion at a time, it is extremely rare that visitors setting foot on land go beyond a hundred people. It is so bad that animals get disrupted when there are visitors for they cannot get food for themselves or for their young and they are also not able to rest.

She adds that Science cannot determine yet if there will be a long term impact. Some of the fears include tourists touching flora and throwing garbage recklessly. This is why large and experienced staffs are there to insure when visitors go ashore, they have minimal impact and on top of that, this explains why tour operators adhere to such guidelines as stated by the system espoused by the Antarctic Treaty. That series of agreements includes the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, since signed by 43 nations, plus environmental protocol that since Jan 14, 1998, has banned mining and oil drilling and provided other environmental safeguards, including fishing limits and occasional Antarctic cruises. You may be looking for Tours To Papua New Guinea information, in which case you should visit that site.

Zodiacs are now being used by the tour association, based in New York that voluntarily adopted the 100 person limit for shore visits, for these motorized rubber boats are more convenient. Of the 15 vessels in Antarctica this season, nine fly Russian flags. With the Soviet Union’s break up, a motley of smaller ships became accessible for tour operators. An average of 40 to 80 people are welcome aboard these ships, several vessels along one that is know to be an ice breaker, all of them being able to plow through ice with hardened hulls. It is very apparent though that there is growing concern on the environmental frontier of the White Continent. It’s possible that in the future, we’ll look back and say, no problem, we worried about it needlessly. For the sake of this continent, we should limit our travels there until the time that science presents the solutions.

Flying over Antarctica for the day takes the plane above the Magnetic South Pole. The compass needle jumps and wiggles as they cross the area. Many meters beneath the comfortable passengers, the ice sheet has been etched into wave-like patterns by a relentlessly blowing polar wind as it heads out to sea. The glacier below seems to be puffing steam, as the brisk wind blows wisps of snow across the surface. This is clearly visible from the air.

Traveling over 2,030 kilometers to reach the South Magnetic Pole in 1909, took the first explorers 134 days. They meticulously trod through the deadly ice. Yet today, these passengers are able to travel to this remote spot in Antarctica from, in less than four hours for an amazing, never-before possible day trip that allows them to visit our planet’s last untouched wilderness. Comprehensive information on antarctica cruise is found on there.

Compass needles jump and the compasses themselves spin when they pass over the South Magnetic Pole because it is at this spot that many lines of magnetic force converge in the Southern Hemisphere. However, this jet doesn’t need a compass to stay on course, it uses a much more sophisticated satellite guidance system and gyroscope to accommodate for the magnetic fluctuations. The geographic South Pole, explored in the early 1900′s, is nearly 2,500 kilometers away from the Magnetic South Pole. Richard E. Byrd, an American aviator, claimed to have made the first flights in the 1920s over both the North Pole and the South Pole.

The Antarctic winds blast past the airplane. Within the cabin itself, passengers are relaxed and warm. Some are only wearing t-shirts and shorts and sip on chardonnay. The trip is almost like a party in the air, and as the first icebergs are sighted by the passengers, the atmosphere becomes even more lively and excited. The best vantage points for iceberg-viewing are sought out, as sightseers of all ages travel the plane to look out the windows.

More and more icebergs enter the scene as you near the Antarctic coast, fitting together like a jigsaw puzzle, irregular white shapes against the deep blue background of the sea.Seeing the glacier?s meeting the sea is awe-inspiring to the passengers, who have been sharing windows so that everyone can get a good photo or video. Another spectacular view comes when the plan flies into view of the white ice capped Trans Antarctic Mountains that tower high into the sky. See this cruises to antartica information for a deeper understanding.

These tourist flights have revived the aerial tourism for Antarctic that had flourished years ago when there were regular flights of jumbo aircraft by two major airlines across this dark and cold continent. Along with the marvelous views of mountains, icebergs, coasts, and glaciers, passengers are treated to an aerial view of an old French research station, and it’s deserted runway, which originally displaced a penguin colony, but was left in ruin by a tidal wave. You reflect on the exotic and majestic sights that you have viewed as your flight turns back toward, and, curiously, you suddenly recall that geologists were the first people to reach the South Magnetic Pole many years ago.

Penguins and elephant seals, icebergs and albatrosses are the symbols of Antarctica. From tiny baby fur seals that weigh 10 pounds at the most to massive blocks of ice that hold 3.3 billion gallons of water achieving a weight of 3 million tons, the windiest, driest, and highest continent does not fail to impress.

In terms of spending the Christmas holiday, two well traveled teachers chose Antarctica to spend it in even if this is a land of voyages ending up in tragedy not to mention a land of frozen wastes. Not having been to the continent in the past is why this atypical vacation spot that is Antarctica became enticing for these teachers. As they read about the explorer in a travel magazine they were already in the process of planning this vacation. Get in touch with this resource if you have a desire to find out about antarctica travel.

What the women found out was the necessity of preparation. The dress code for a day in Antarctica requires three pairs of socks, at least one in wool under a pair of rubber boots that weigh 15 pounds, insulated underwear, a regular set of clothes and a parka, all topped by rubberized, seamless and waterproof pants and slicker. Two pairs of gloves, one waterproof, complete the costume.

The possibility of frostbite was there, never mind the cold feet. It is summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Only able to move to 32 degrees was the water even if the ice was warming up above the freezing point and the breaking ice pack allowed for traveling to be done. Measuring air temperature with a thermometer, an Antarctic research station received a reading of 47 degrees. Snowstorms and sleet storms confronted the explorer in the evening after the sun had shined directly on it for the entire day.

As added information for the women, they were told about the unpredictable weather and how winds affect day to day itineraries. Even if they stayed in the southern ice cap for 24 days no 84 below wind chill came their way as opposed to what happened in their hometown last Christmas. Dreaded but overcome was the Drake Passage. Plenty of ships have not been able to overcome the passage that runs from Cape Horn on the tip of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula. Strapped in for sleep by their bunk seat belts, the women traveled on the Explorer for 48 hours across this passage. For one of the ladies, some bruises were inevitable.

There were millions and millions of penguins. For one lady, the penguins and their nests could be touched. The daily activity of penguins is fussing. There was much bliss in looking at them. Seals were also there. Open mouthed scooting around was their game. These are not as gentle if you get close to them and their babies.

Much beauty can be seen all throughout. The sky is the most gorgeous blue all the time, it’s so clean and the water is so blue. Icebergs measured to about three stories high and were as large as city blocks and these floated along and some even had penguins. It was also part of their journey to see the old whaling stations closed for 20 years. While the trip didn’t include a plane ride to the South Pole, they saw some of the huts left by the early explorers, some still hold canned food stored there years ago.

In this particular journey they went to Punta Arenas on the south end of Chile, the Shetland Islands, Antarctica, the South Orkneys, South Georgia, and finally the Falklands and then back to the starting point.Such a trip was truly extraordinary as both of them agree.
